Seoul in January can be a fantastic experience, especially if you enjoy winter activities. Here are some suggestions for things to do:

Bundle Up for Outdoor Fun

First things first, it’s cold in Seoul in January. I mean, really cold. But don’t let that stop you!

There’s still plenty of outdoor fun to be had. One of the coolest things to do in Seoul in January is ice skating at the Seoul Plaza Ice Rink. It’s right in front of City Hall, and the views are amazing.

Warm Up with Korean BBQ

After all that outdoor activity, you’ll want to warm up. And what better way than with some sizzling Korean BBQ? Trust me, there’s nothing like grilling your own meat at the table. It’s not just food, it’s an experience.

My favorite spot is in Hongdae, but you’ll find great BBQ joints all over the city. Don’t forget to try the kimchi – it’s extra tasty in winter!

Explore Palace Grounds in the Snow

Visiting the palaces is one of the must-do things in Seoul in January. They’re beautiful any time of year, but there’s something magical about seeing them covered in snow.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is the big one, but don’t miss Changdeokgung either. The Secret Garden there is stunning in winter.

Tip: Check the schedule for the changing of the guard ceremony – it’s a cool thing to see!

Hit the Slopes Near Seoul

Did you know you can go skiing just outside Seoul? It’s true! There are several ski resorts within easy reach of the city. I had a blast at Vivaldi Park.

Even if you’re a beginner like me, they’ve got lessons and easy slopes. It’s a great way to enjoy the winter weather. Remember to book your lift tickets in advance – it can get busy on weekends!

Soak in a Traditional Korean Bathhouse

After a day in the cold, there’s nothing better than soaking in a jjimjilbang (Korean bathhouse). It’s one of the most relaxing things to do in Seoul in January.

You can spend hours moving between different temperature pools and saunas. My favorite is Dragon Hill Spa in Yongsan.

Shop ‘Til You Drop at Indoor Markets

When the weather’s too chilly, head indoors to Seoul’s amazing markets. Namdaemun Market is huge and has everything from clothes to souvenirs.

For tech gadgets, check out Yongsan Electronics Market. And don’t miss Gwangjang Market for amazing street food.

Catch the Sunset at N Seoul Tower

For the best views of the city, head up to N Seoul Tower. It’s one of the top things to do in Seoul in January, especially at sunset. The city lights coming on as the sun goes down is just breathtaking.

If you’re feeling romantic, add a love lock to the fence. Just remember to bring a lock with you – they’re pricey to buy up there!

Experience a Traditional Tea Ceremony

Warm up and chill out with a traditional Korean tea ceremony. It’s a peaceful break from the busy city. I loved the one at Insadong’s Dawon Tea House.

They’ll teach you all about different teas and the right way to drink them. Fun fact: Some Korean teas are said to have health benefits, perfect for fighting off winter colds!

Join the Seollal Celebrations

If you’re lucky enough to be there for Seollal (Korean New Year), you’re in for a treat! It usually falls in late January or early February. Many things in Seoul in January revolve around this holiday.

You’ll see people in traditional hanbok, eating tteokguk (rice cake soup), and playing traditional games. Just keep in mind that many businesses close for a few days, so plan ahead!

Enjoy Winter Festivals

Seoul hosts some cool winter festivals. The Herb Island Light Festival is magical, with millions of lights creating a winter wonderland.

There’s also the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival just outside Seoul, where you can try ice fishing! Check local listings for exact dates, as they can change yearly.
